Merry Merry Quite Contrary

Dear Blogger,

Christmas has come and gone. Not much of a festive spirit is it? I'm beginning to think Singaporeans are more interested in going on holidays than celebrating holidays. I noticed it on Chinese New Year from some years back. Then this year, Hari Raya too, which I thought was unthinkable. Now Christmas???

What happened to us? Sooner or later, we'll forget how to party too. I think cultural holidays should be celebrated at home, with family. We shouldn't be running away from friends and family on special days like these. We have the rest of the year to do that.

On Christmas, I've received "reminders" in my Facebook not to say "Merry Christmas" because as Muslims, we shouldn't acknowledge such things. Apparently, when we greet "Merry Christmas", we accept that Jesus Christ was born on this day.

Now, I've never claimed to be a theology specialist but where is the logic in that? How are the words "merry" and "Christmas" defined to be confirmation of anything? The common dictionary defined merry as "full of cheerfulness or gaiety" or "joyfulness". No where in that definition did it say blasphemy to Muslims.

What's next? I can't say "Gong Xi Fa Cai" too because it emphasised prosperity rather than thankfulness?  Or "Happy Deepavali" because it's a Hindu festival? Why stop there? Let's declare National Day a sin too!

Sometimes I wonder if these Muslim clerics are the real deceivers. They're zealots who confused their own oppression with religious zeal. Why are we so obsessed with sin and hell anyway? Why can't we focus more on good deeds and heaven? I want to embrace my faith wholeheartedly by all this negativity is a turn-off.

On a totally different note, I have what seems like a boil on the right cheek of my buttocks. At first, it was painful to sit as it swelled to the size of a mini doughnut. Then after 2 days of hot compression, it popped with pus oozing like lava. Now it's itchy and there's still a lump with blood that oozes every now and then. Do I need to go surgery to clear the abscess?

Sincerely,
modgurl.
